GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A motorcyclist pleaded guilty to dangerous driving after being clocked travelling more than double the posted 90 km/hr speed limit last month on P.E.I.
Police registered Eric Bernard McKenna, 27, of Murray Harbour riding his motorcycle on Route 1 near Vernon Bridge on May 15 at 186 km/hr – 96 km/hr over the speed limit.
Police pursued McKenna and a second motorcyclist that was driving at excessive speed with McKenna.
McKenna eluded police after striking an RCMP cruiser with his motorcycle. People were able to pull over the second motorcyclist and learn McKenna’s identity.
McKenna turned himself in to police later that day.
He pleaded guilty to dangerous driving in provincial court in Georgetown last week.
The Crown says restitution of close to $3,000 is being sought by the RCMP for damage caused to a cruiser.
McKenna has paid $2,800 in fines for prior traffic offences, the court heard.
A pre-sentence report was ordered for McKenna, who is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
This conviction follows a series of incidents involving Island drivers travelling at excessive speeds, including a motorist charged with excessive speeding after being caught June 22 by RCMP travelling at 157 km/hr in a 90 km/hr zone on Route 2 in Bloomfield.
