Islanders looking to do some shopping on Canada Day will have lots of options.
With the exception of Confederation Court Mall in Charlottetown, most major stores and malls plan on being open on Sunday. But this year the actual holiday isn't until Monday.
One of the year's biggest holiday weekends is a bit different this year because Canada Day falls on a Sunday. That means the actual holiday, as far as the business sector is concerned, is actually Monday.
Faye Martin, director of labour and industrial relations for the province, says Canada Day is listed as a holiday in the province's Employment Standards Act. But because it falls on a Sunday, it changes things a bit.
"Normally, it would be observed on the day it falls but this year because it falls on Sunday there is federal legislation that supercedes our act, called the Holidays Act,'' Martin says.
"It says, very clearly, that when this holiday falls on a Sunday it shall be observed on the Monday.''
Only once every seven years does this happen.
That means everyone who is working on Sunday will get paid the same as any other day because, by law, it is considered a normal day. Not the case on Monday.
Employees are entitled to extra for working this Monday.
Due to the legislation and how that affects paycheques, the Charlottetown Mall has decided to trim its hours back and will open the doors Monday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will open on Sunday, from noon to 5 p.m.
The Confederation Court Mall will open Monday, as will Canadian Tire, which decided to operate on the holiday Monday, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.
