CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Islanders will be paying more for power in the new year after the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission approved an electricity rate increase.
Maritime Electric announced today that as of Jan. 1, what it called typical residential customers will see an increase of three per cent in their annual electricity costs.
That figure is based on using 650 kWh.
Maritime Electric’s CEO Jason Roberts said the utility hasn’t increased rates in almost three years.
“The rate increase reflects the extraordinary costs incurred to restore electricity service after Hurricane Dorian and the continued investment in the electricity system to ensure reliable delivery of this essential service to our customers,” he said.
