Supporting Island seniors to live longer at home in the company of family, friends, neighbours and community is a central plank of the Liberal plan, said the party’s leader.
Wade MacLauchlan said people are living longer, healthier lives.
“In keeping with that reality, the Liberals are proposing a series of measures that will enhance the lives of seniors in a way that permits them to stay in their homes and communities,” he said.
Specifically, the Liberals are proposing to invest an additional $750,000 per year in home repairs and renovations for seniors, explore new technology supports to make seniors’ homes safer and promote greater independence while ensuring new levels of safety, introduce a new home first initiative, which will provide family caregivers with up to $500 per month, and invest in new homecare nurses to allow for coverage seven days per week.
The plan will also expand the role of paramedics to provide seniors and their families with access to 24-7 non-emergency care, eliminate fees for lower income seniors to medications, reduce costs for access to generic medications by half, eliminate all ambulance fees and support travel costs for Islanders seeing patients in other parts of the region.
MacLauchlan said seniors are becoming more active and independent.
“The Liberal party’s proposals recognize that growing reality with innovative new programs to build a greater sense of security within the home and the community.”
