KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — A Kensington high school student has been named a recipient of the prestigious $100,000 Loran Scholars award.

Marilyn Sheen, a Grade 12 student at Kensington Intermediate Senior High was one of 88 finalists - and just two Islanders - up for the award. Thirty-four awards are handed out each year, however, this year there were 35.

A communications officer from the Loran Scholars Foundation in Toronto confirmed Sheen was a recipient.

The Loran Scholars Foundation was founded in 1988. Scholars are selected for their academic and extra-curricular achievements, as well as leadership potential.

As well as being an avid mountain biker – Sheen competed at the Canada Games – she’s been coaching CanSkate at the Kensington Skating Club for the last six years.

She is also an in-school mentor with Big Brothers Big Sisters.

She plans to study sustainability at Dalhousie University or McGill.

Sheen said she’d like to be a science writer and publish stories like those in National Geographic.

“The writers are always passionate about whatever they’re writing about. I don’t think it even matters what the subject is, because whenever you read it, all of a sudden you’re passionate about it, too,” Sheen said in an interview with the Journal Pioneer in November upon learning she was a finalist.

Olivia Batten, an 18-year-old Westisle Composite High School student, was also a finalist for the scholarship.
