KENSINGTON, P.E.I. — A Kensington town councillor would like to see improvements to the tennis courts at Kensington Intermediate-Senior High School.

Ivan Gallant asked recently if the town should contact the Public Schools Branch (PSB) to see if anything can be worked out between the two parties for renovations to three fenced-in courts at the school.

Mayor Rowan Caseley said, in previous conversations he had with the school board, it was indicated they had no interest in putting money into the courts.

“It’s kind of a shame because there have been people using it in the past and can’t right now,” said Gallant during a committee of council meeting.

Proposed work would include repaving the playing surface, painting of lines and possibly the purchasing of nets.

Gallant said there is good fencing around the courts and lots of parking available at KISH.

He asked if the town could again attempt to work out an agreement with the school board to renovate and maintain the courts.

Caseley supported this, adding, “We will see if we can come up with something.”

Caseley, who measured the courts at 100 by 120 paces, said the PSB doesn’t want to invest because schools do not have a tennis program and the cost for resurfacing is expected to be around $10,000.

With Kensington scheduled to host the P.E.I. 55-Plus Games in 2021, Gallant noted the courts could be marked for both tennis and pickleball.

Council agreed to look at the costs involved and proceed from there.
