Josh Underhay wants to run for the Greens in District 9, Charlottetown-Hillsborough Park.

The teacher at Birchwood Intermediate School in Charlottetown recently announced he’d be putting his name up for the party’s nomination at the district’s meeting June 28, 6:30 p.m., at the Murphy Community Centre.

For the past 12 years, Underhay has been a teacher with P.E.I.’s English and French school boards, as well as in the United Kingdom, the Czech Republic and China.

Recently, he lobbied for cycling and mixed-use infrastructure in the greater Charlottetown area, working across party lines to promote active transportation as an alternative to the automobile.

Underhay recently served on the Green Party’s provincial council as the representative for Queens County and for Charlottetown. He volunteered on Hannah Bell’s winning campaign in the November 2017 byelection.

In addition, he wrote letters in English and French and published videos in Mandarin to promote proportional representation in the 2016 electoral reform plebiscite.

A strong supporter of culture and the arts, Underhay has played trumpet for more than 20 years and has performed with many artists and ensembles. He currently plays with The Sidewalks.

Underhay speaks English, French, Spanish, Mandarin Chinese and Czech. He has chosen to speak French to his children to give them the gift of bilingualism.

Josh lives in East Royalty with his wife, Karri, and their two sons.
