Island Waste Management Corporation say not to worry about missing Jan. 6 deadline

To prolong the holiday spirit and share the gift of giving with wildlife, the Nature Conservancy of Canada (NCC) has a suggestion. This year, instead of bringing an old Christmas tree to the curb, the not-for-profit, private land conservation group suggests people put it in their backyard.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — There is still hope for Islanders who missed the January deadline to get rid of their Christmas trees.

Gerry Moore, chief executive officer for the Island Waste Management Corporation, said if residents did not have their tree taken away on the Jan. 6 deadline, there are several options open to them.

If they are able to do so, they can take them to any of Island Waste Management’s disposal sites, free of charge.

Otherwise, waste management will try to collect the trees when the snow thaws to the point where trees are visible and accessible.

Moore also suggested that residents can wait until spring to leave their trees curbside to be picked up.

Residents can also contact Island Waste Management customer service at 1-888-280-8111 for additional information.

Moore said because of inclement weather earlier this month, many trees could not be seen. In addition, in some cases, waste management employees could not get to some routes.

“What happened is a lot of our employees can't see (the trees), let alone pick them up,” he said. “Some of those trees are frozen in snowbanks, and because we had that storm with the freezing snow and hail, we couldn’t get all to all areas.”

If residents need to get rid of their trees, they can contact Island Waste Management customer service at 1-888-280-8111.
