CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The P.E.I. poverty reduction council wants to add more community members to make sure the province’s poverty reduction measures meet the diverse needs of Islanders.

“Community leadership on the council will bring essential voices of Islanders with lived experiences of poverty and those who support and advocate for them,” said Andrea MacDonald, poverty reduction council chairwoman. “Their perspectives and advice are critical to successfully addressing the complex issues in the action plan.”

The Poverty Reduction Action Plan, released in November 2018, outlined 67 action items focused on improving housing, food, employment and well-being. The P.E.I. government committed $68 million over five years to implement all recommendations of the plan.

Within the next six months, the P.E.I. government aims to address key recommendations of the action plan including the introduction of a new secure income program to benefit the most vulnerable.

Islanders with lived experience and those working with Islanders experiencing poverty are encouraged to sign up to help through the Engage P.E.I. webpage at www.princeedwardisland.ca.
