GEORGETOWN - A P.E.I. man who stole a cheque from people who were trying to help him as he dealt with his addiction was sentenced recently to five months in jail.

Michael Robert Bryenton, 39, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Georgetown for sentencing after pleading guilty to fraud, possessing a stolen cheque and breaching his probation.

Bryenton, who Orr said had a criminal record more than 57 pages long, was working for the victims’ farm.

Crown attorney Nathan Beck said the victims were trying to help Bryenton, and it was hurtful to them when he stole money from their operation.

Defence lawyer Yolande Murphy said Bryenton regretted what he did to the victims.

Bryenton wrote apology letters prior to his sentencing.

Orr gave Bryenton credit of three days for time already spent in custody and ordered him to pay $2,000 in restitution.
