A documentary about the life and music of Canadian icon Gene MacLellan has brought home hardware from the FIN Atlantic International Film Festival.

Island filmmaker Millefiore Clarkes’s “The Song and the Sorrow” was named Best Atlantic Short Documentary at the festival which ran from Sept. 13 to 20.

The documentary followed Catherine MacLellan, daughter of Gene, as she explored his life and music while he dealt with depression. The elder MacLellan, known for songs such as “Snowbird” dealt with depression throughout his career. In the movie, Catherine, her friends, and family members talk about Gene’s battle with mental illness and the importance of having open conversations about mental health.
