CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Eight of Charlottetown’s 10 wards will be represented by incumbent councillors after Monday’s municipal election.

Bob Doiron held on to his council seat in Ward 6, beating out a couple of experienced contenders. Melissa Hilton, who held the council seat in Ward 9 since 2005 and is the city’s current finance chairwoman, ran in Ward 6 this time around. David MacDonald, who held the seat prior to Doiron was hoping to regain the post he lost in the 2014 election. In the end, Doiron held on with 588 votes to Hilton’s 560 and MacDonald’s 464.

Current Deputy Mayor Mike Duffy also earned his seat back in Ward 3 over a bevy of contenders: Norman Beck, Frank MacEachern and Keith Kennedy. Duffy’s closest rival was Beck with 595 votes to Duffy’s 648.

Ward 2's incumbent councillor Terry MacLeod edged past his competitor, Justin Muttart, with 686 votes to Muttart's 610.

And Charlottetown’s longest-serving incumbent, Mitch Tweel, who has represented Ward 4 since 1994, beat out municipal election newcomers Valentine Gomez and Richard Turner.

Jason Coady (Ward 8) beat Trevor MacKinnon, while Terry Bernard (Ward 10) won over Jason MacKinnon and Ryan Cooke to earn back their council seats.

Charlottetown council newcomers will include Julie McCabe, who beat out Lornie Hughes in Ward 9 – the seat Hilton left vacant.

And Alanna Jankov won Charlottetown’s downtown district, Ward 1, after Eddie Rice opted not to run again. Jankov, who earned 516 votes, faced competition from four men for the post: Paul Haddad (her closest rival with 435 ballots), Ron Dowling (291), Laurent Beaulieu (149) and Leo Killorn (75).
