Ole Hammarlund has announced his intention to seek the District 13, Charlottetown-Brighton nomination for the Green Party for the next provincial election.

Hammarlund made the announcement Monday night, June 11, at Beaconsfield Carriage House after treating the crowd to a slideshow and video of the Ark Project, opened 42 years ago by then Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau and P.E.I. Premier Alex Campbell. Hammarlund is one of two architects who designed and built the Ark.

Born in Denmark, Hammarlund moved to the Boston area to finish his architectural studies at MIT. In 1974, he and partner, David Bergmark, were commissioned to design the Ark, and Hammarlund established permanent residency on P.E.I. in 1977.

Other local renovation projects and designs by Hammarlund include the Coles Building, the Main and Duffy buildings at UPEI, Hensley Green and Kings Square co-ops, the Y lofts and numerous seniors housing projects across the Island.

Hammarlund has served on the Arts Council as well as on local and national architectural organizations and is a Fellow of the Royal Architectural Institute of Canada.

HIs family includes wife and partner Karen Lips, a landscape architect, and son Leif.

Hammarlund noted that he was inspired by the Ark exhibit as well as by Green Leader Peter Bevan-Baker to become an active participant in P.E.I. politics.

District 13 is currently held by Liberal MLA Jordan Brown.
