CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Two pit bull-type dogs that attacked and killed another dog in Stratford last month may now have to be taken away from their owners.
The P.E.I. Humane Society said Friday it has not been able to verify whether the owners of two dogs are complying with requirements to allow them to keep their pets.
On Oct. 25, a 13-year-old lab-husky mix, Louie, was tied up at Reeves Estates property when he was attacked by the two pit bulls.
Louie had to be euthanized as a result of his injuries.
The pit bulls were given dangerous dog declarations, and their owners had until Nov. 7 to demonstrate compliance with Stratford’s animal control bylaw. The humane society said it has not been able to verify that all the requirements have been met.
Those requirements include having the dogs muzzled off the property, an insurance liability policy, having the dogs spayed/neutered and a Stratford licence, among other conditions.
The society said it is working with the town and the RCMP regarding legal procedures to conclude the matter and ensure community safety.
