CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Former provincial MLA and federal MP George Proud has died.

Proud died Wednesday at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital at the age of 80.

During his time in public office, Proud served provincially in the district of 5th Queens and the federal riding of Charlottetown.

Premier Dennis King said Proud was a “tireless champion’’ who fought hard for what mattered most to his constituents.

“He was a proud Islander with a passion and deep-rooted commitment to serving his community that was unwavering,’’ King said. “To his friends and colleagues, George was always a source of kindness and wisdom. His years of hard work and public service to advance the interests of Prince Edward Island will not be forgotten.’’

From 1974 to 1979, he sat in the legislature as the representative for 5th Queens. Proud moved to federal politics in the 1988 election when he was elected in the Hillsborough electoral district for the Liberal party. He was re-elected in the 1993 and 1997 federal elections.

After leaving federal politics as of the 2000 federal election, Proud became a member of the Canadian Transportation Agency in 2001.

He is survived by his wife, Ann, and children Michael (Anne), David (Sheryl) and Geoffrey (Jo-Anne).

Proud is resting at MacLean Funeral Home Swan Chapel. Visiting hours will be Friday from 4-7 p.m.
