WOOD ISLANDS, P.E.I. - Northumberland Ferries Ltd. has cancelled all of its sailings between Wood Island, P.E.I. and Caribou, N.S. for Thursday in advance of a weather system expected to hit the Maritimes overnight.

A major low-pressure system will track towards the Island then stall southeast of Cape Breton.

Precipitation will begin as rain this evening but is expected to change to snow later tonight.

The low will also generate significant winds gusting up to 100 km/h tonight and persist into Thursday.

Heavy snow is expected to taper to light snow mixed with rain Thursday morning.

Snowfall totals of 15 to 25 centimetres are currently expected with lesser amounts over eastern sections of the province where snow will mix with rain for the duration of the storm.

Additionally, large waves and pounding surf could give elevated water levels along northeast facing coastal sections tonight and Thursday.
