CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — After three people overdosed in little more than a day, chief public health officer Dr. Heather Morrison is warning Islanders that fentanyl is in the province.

Morrison made the announcement before giving her daily update on the coronavirus (COVID-19) on Friday afternoon.

She said she wants islanders to understand there is a serious risk when they choose to take street drugs.

Morrison also said she is asking people to take steps to reduce the risk, including carrying kits with naloxone.

If the chief public health office sees a cluster of overdoses it triggers the office to issue that kind of alert, Morrison said.

In this circumstance, Morrison said there were three overdoses related to fentanyl within a period of just over a day and in different parts of the province.

That’s what triggered the alert.

Morrison said she couldn’t confirm if there were any deaths related to the overdoses.

Premier Dennis King, who was also at the news conference, said the fentanyl warning is a scary and real reminder that everyday life is ongoing in P.E.I.
