Feds award design contract for modernization of Veterans Affairs building in Charlottetown

A Toronto company is being hired to design upgrades to the Daniel J. MacDonald Building in Charlottetown, otherwise known as the DVA headquarters

Sean Casey, MP for Charlottetown, said today that the $3.3‑million contract for the renewal project of the building is going to NORR Architects & Engineers Limited. 

The announcement was made on behalf of federal ministers responsible for the building and its upgrade.

The design work for the building renewal will begin immediately, with construction expected to start in January 2020 and be completed by fall 2023.

"It is important that staff have a safe place to work and that our buildings run as efficiently as possible,” said Seamus O'Regan, Minister of Veterans Affairs and Associate Minister of National Defence The modernization of the Veterans Affairs Canada head office will ensure that staff have a place where they can work to their full abilities to provide the vital programs and services that veterans and their families need."

"This project demonstrates the Government of Canada's commitment to maintain the national headquarters for Veterans Affairs Canada here in Charlottetown,” said Casey.

Quick facts

•  The Daniel J. MacDonald Building was constructed in 1984 to house the national headquarters of Veterans Affairs Canada.
•  Building systems will be installed to reduce the overall greenhouse gas emissions to meet federal objectives by 2030. The design will be targeting an environmental certification of five Green Globes®, which is the highest level under the Green Globes® certification program for environmental sustainability.
