The family of Const. Heidi Stevenson, who was killed trying to stop a mass murderer from continuing his rampage on April 19, released a statement thanking people for the outpouring of support in the days following the tragedy.

“The Stevenson family would like to thank our community, the province of Nova Scotia, Canada, as well as Heidi's extended RCMP and policing family for the incredible outpouring of love and support we have received in the last couple of weeks,” the statement said. “Your stories and memories have been a source of comfort for us, and we truly appreciate all of the tributes to Heidi that we have seen taking place through music, writing and kind gestures in communities across the country.”

The gunman killed 22 people in a series of attacks that spread from the small community of Portapique on the night of April 18 and continued through several areas before ending in Enfield when police killed the shooter.

The Stevenson family statement reached out to the other families affected.

“Our family is only one of many families who are grieving deeply for loved ones lost in recent weeks,” it said. “We would like to send our sincere condolences to everyone who is navigating this very tough road along with us. We understand your pain and are thinking of you.”

The statement, signed “with gratitude, Dean, Connor and Ava,” respectfully asked for privacy as they grieve.

“There’s no doubt in our minds that the kindness shown to us and to Heidi since her passing has given us strength. We are grateful for all of the thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.”
