CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Beginning April 6, the province will be offering home learning opportunities for school-age children, including those with limited access to high-speed internet.
In a media briefing Tuesday, March 31, Education Minister Brad Trivers said teachers with the Public Schools Branch and the Commission scolaire de langue française will be responsible for leading home learning for students. Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19 strain) pandemic, all P.E.I. schools will remain closed until at least May 11.
"Regardless of your access to the internet, you can still continue learning. Most of these will require nothing more than paper and a pencil," Trivers said.
Trivers added all provincial assessments for the school year will be cancelled.
Tammy Hubley-Little, the department’s director of English education, programs and services, said kindergarten-aged children will receive 30-minutes of “holistic learning material” per day. At the primary level, students will receive 45 minutes of instruction per day, while students at the elementary level will receive 60 minutes. Intermediate students will receive 90 minutes of instruction per day.
Counselling support and prepared school meals will be provided to students in need.
Premier Dennis King also addressed graduating high school students, assuring them that they will have a prom and graduation ceremony.
"I will not allow COVID-19 to rob you, the class of 2020, of these important celebrations," King said.
