CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - Messy weather could be on its way for P.E.I. as Environment Canada forecasts snow, ice pellets, freezing rain and rain to start the weekend.

The weather agency issued a special weather statement this morning, saying a developing low-pressure system is expected to track eastward across southern Quebec Friday night and pass north of the Maritimes on Saturday.

That system could bring snow in P.E.I. start Friday afternoon before changing to ice pellets or freezing rain and then rain.

Scattered showers are expected Saturday morning.

Canada says strong southerly winds are expected as temperatures rise well above freezing overnight Friday.

Environment Canada forecast

Today - A mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries this morning. Clearing this afternoon. Wind northwest 20 km/h gusting to 40 becoming west 20 this afternoon. High -6. Wind chill -18 in the morning and -13 in the afternoon. UV index 1 or low.

Tonight - Increasing cloudiness. A few flurries beginning near midnight. Wind west 20 km/h becoming northwest 30 gusting to 50 this evening. Low -12. Wind chill -13 in the evening and -22 overnight.

Dec. 27 - Flurries with risk of snow squalls. Amount 2 cm. Wind northwest 30 km/h gusting to 50. High -9. Wind chill near -22. Night: Clear. Low -13.

Dec. 28 - Flurries. High -4. Night: Periods of snow or rain. Low -4.

Dec. 29 - Cloudy with 60 per cent chance of showers. High 5. Night: Cloudy periods with 30 per cent chance of flurries. Windy. Low -11.

Dec. 30 - A mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries. High -10. Night: Clear. Low -12.

Dec. 31 - A mix of sun and cloud. High -7. Night: Cloudy periods. Low -9.

Jan. 1 - A mix of sun and cloud with 30 per cent chance of flurries. High -4.
