CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A woman facing charges that include impaired driving causing death after she allegedly struck and killed a cyclist has elected to have her case heard in P.E.I. Supreme Court.
Norma Jean Hunter, 44, made a brief appearance before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown Monday on three charges, including impaired driving causing death and leaving the scene of an accident.
Defence lawyer Thane MacEachern told the court Hunter was electing to have the matter heard in supreme court by judge alone.
Hunter allegedly struck and killed 27-year-old Jacob Simmons as he was cycling on Route 210 in Kinross on June 12.
The RCMP allege she left the scene and later provided breathalyzer samples that were twice the legal limit.
During Monday’s proceedings, Hunter sat behind MacEachern, looking down and showing no reaction as she listened.
Her next court date is scheduled for Sept. 8 in P.E.I. Supreme Court.
