CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. man who told police he drank four beer at a Cornwall restaurant where he was involved in a collision in the parking lot was sentenced recently to seven days in jail.
Dennis Wendell Docherty, 45, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court in Charlottetown where he pleaded guilty to drunk driving.
Crown attorney Nathan Beck told the court that on Sept. 21 at 8 p.m., the RCMP were dispatched to Sam’s Family Restaurant in Cornwall for a minor collision in the parking lot where one driver appeared intoxicated.
The court heard Docherty was one of the drivers and he told police he drank four beer while at the restaurant.
He later provided breathalyzer samples that were more than 1.5 times the legal limit.
Docherty told the court he accepted responsibility for his actions.
“I made a mistake. I realize that,” he said.
Along with the jail time, Docherty must pay a $1,500 fine and a $450 victim surcharge.
He is also banned from driving for one year.
