GEORGETOWN, P.E.I. — A P.E.I. woman whose blood alcohol level was around four times the legal limit after she was caught driving drunk near a daycare will be back in court in January for sentencing.
Evelyn Marie Arcand, 51, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in Georgetown where she pleaded guilty to drunk driving.
Crown attorney Chad McQuaid told the court that on Oct. 30, the RCMP responded to a 911 call about a female who was driving erratically.
Arcand was driving the vehicle when the police pulled her over at around 5:45 p.m. in Montague next to a daycare where parents were picking up children.
McQuaid said that when the police stopped Arcand, they saw two alcoholic beverages in the vehicle.
The court heard Arcand later provided breathalyzer samples that showed her blood alcohol level was around four times the legal limit.
She also didn’t have a valid driver’s licence at the time and her vehicle was impounded after her arrest.
On Thursday, McQuaid reviewed Arcand’s criminal record, which included two prior convictions for drunk driving and one count of refusing to provide a breath sample.
Orr adjourned the matter until Jan. 2 and placed Arcand on an undertaking, which included no operation of any motor vehicle.
It also included a condition that Arcand immediately contact Kings County Addiction Services, she request an assessment and she follow any treatment as directed.
Orr referred to the high breathalyzer readings and the fact Arcand was driving drunk near a daycare.
“Pretty serious stuff,” Orr said.
She also said the undertaking didn’t include a condition that Arcand not drink because she didn’t want to set the woman up for failure.
