Darren Noonan, CPA, CA, was appointed unanimously by the legislative assembly on May 26 as P.E.I.’s auditor general.

Noonan has been a member of Chartered Professional Accountants of P.E.I. (CPA P.E.I.), and its predecessor organization, The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Prince Edward Island, since December 1992 and is a member in good standing.

In 2015, there was a merger of the accounting bodies, chartered accountants, certified general accountants and certified management accountants.

At that time, a new act and new regulations were created, and a licensing measure was established for people who were practicing public accounting.

Noonan was an owner and part of senior management for a local automotive group and did not need a license to practise public accounting.

Prior to that, he had been in public practice for 16 years, where he became a partner of a local accounting firm.

After his announcement was made official, Noonan applied to CPA P.E.I. to obtain a license to practise public accounting, which he has received.

Noonan starts his new position with a special COVID-19 assignment requested by executive council, which is due by Aug. 1, 2021.

Noonan will take over from Jane MacAdam who served in the position since 2013.
