SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A prominent Island businessman was awarded Summerside's 2019 George Key Sr. Citizen of the Year Award.

D. Alex MacDonald, 92, received his award as part of the Canada Day celebrations at Spinnaker’s Landing.

Mayor Basil Stewart praised the choice.

“The committee has made an excellent choice with D. Alex MacDonald. He has made a tremendous contribution to Summerside over many years through business, creating many jobs; serving as a councillor, through the sports of curling, and with the Silver Fox Curling and Yacht Club.

"D. Alex, as he is known, was always there for sponsorships for many sports, and he is presently the major sponsor of the D. Alex MacDonald Summerside Western Capitals in the Maritime Jr. A Hockey League.”

MacDonald has a long and storied history of contributing to the Summerside community, especially through sports of all kinds and with his work with Islanders struggling to make ends meet.

He is a past chairman of the Prince County Family Welfare Agency, a member of the Junior Achievement P.E.I. Business Hall of Fame, is a recipient of the Queen’s Jubilee Award and has a host of other awards to his name.

The nominating committee for the award is comprised of chairwoman Alanna Shea, Sharon Moyse and Gabe Keough.
