Costume sale a success for Confederation Centre

Kellie Knight, production manager at the Confederation Centre of the Arts in Charlottetown, holds one of the costumes up for grabs today when the centre’s costume sale opens its doors to the public. The centre is trying to make room for some of its new costumes by selling off some of its older material.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - The recent costume sale at the Confederation Centre of the Arts was an overwhelming success.

Fraser McCallum, communications manager for the centre, said more than 2,000 pieces were sold.

The centre held a private and public sale last week to clean out some of its closets that have been worn on the main stage over the years. Some of the items dated back to 1964 when the centre opened its doors.

McCallum said they sold enough costumes to fill Studio 1, the studio which the sale was held in. It’s located next to Memorial Hall.

“That square unit of space would be made available to us for other storage and for other costumes to breathe more and better accessibility for other things in the building,’’ McCallum said.

While the public gobbled up lots of wardrobe pieces, clothing was also sold to more than 37 different theatre schools and groups across the Island, such as ACT (A Community Theatre), Watermark Theatre and Victoria Playhouse.

“Even some smaller groups that do theatre classes and educational components (came in).’’

McCallum said they even welcomed staff in from Parks Canada who do public interpretations at the Anne house.

It was such a hit, McCallum said the centre will look at doing something similar again.

“Maybe we’ll look at other pieces here, other things in our collection that maybe have outgrown their usefulness for us, maybe something on the technical side so stay tuned.’’
