CORNWALL, P.E.I. — With the warmer weather, work has ramped up on the Cornwall bypass highway.

Stephen Yeo, chief engineer with the Department of Transportation, said the project is scheduled to be completed on time by mid-October and should come in under budget.

The former Liberal government said originally the project would cost $65 million, but Yeo said it should come in around $58 million or $59 million.

“We’re working on the New Haven end overpass structure (right now) and that’s going well,’’ Yeo said Wednesday. “They’ve got the girders in and they’re looking to pour the deck around June 10.’’

“We have all kinds of environmental controls in place and things are working well. When you drive through you see grass on an awful lot of the slopes and ditches already now, so it’s good.’’

Island Coastal Ltd. is working on the exit ramps.

The department is also busy installing a steel arch structure where the new highway meets the Baltic Road. That part should be completed by next week.

There will also be overpass structures over the Bannockburn Road and Clyde River as well as a steel arch structure over Lynwood Road.

Island Construction won the contract to do all the paving and gravel placement.

“We need to get some warm weather and start getting some asphalt down.’’

Yeo added that despite the wet spring and occasional heavy rains, runoff has not been a problem.

“We have all kinds of environmental controls in place and things are working well. When you drive through you see grass on an awful lot of the slopes and ditches already now, so it’s good.’’
