A proposed condominium development on property near the Belvedere Golf Course in Charlottetown is on hold.
Hanmac Inc. wants to put three six-unit condominium buildings on property between the Co-op grocery store on Walker Drive and the fourth hole of the golf course.
The land is owned by the club.
During a recent city council public meeting, Coun. Rob Lantz, chairman of planning, said the developer senses it doesn’t have the support of council and feels there are still concerns from some area residents.
In early April, Hanmac Inc. applied for the rezoning and it went to planning board, which recommended the issue should go to a public meeting. Council supported that recommendation.
The public meeting was held April 30. The concerns expressed by about half a dozen residents were primarily around traffic on Kensington Road but there were also questions about potential water runoff and snow removal.
Council committed to having police look into the traffic issue.
The application went back to planning board for a recommendation.
Police looked at the impact on traffic and were satisfied the development would have an insignificant impact on Kensington Road.
The board recommended the rezoning request be approved by council.
However, Hanmac asked for an extra month to address some of the concerns of residents.
The application was not brought to the floor at the May council meeting.
Hanmac then held an informal neighbourhood meeting, which Charlottetown Mayor Clifford Lee and Coun. Danny Redmond, who represents the area, attended with about eight residents.
Lantz says council received approximately a dozen emails of support, mostly from members of the golf course.
Now, Hanmac wants a bit more time to address concerns from residents. Lantz moved a deferral at Monday’s meeting, which passed 8-0.
Lee said at the recent council meeting that he’s concerned over the delay, stating that residents expect council to make a decision.
