ROSEBANK, P.E.I. — A two-vehicle collision in Rosebank has claimed the life of a 67-year-old man, West Prince RCMP confirmed Thursday evening.

The collision occurred along Highway 2 at the Foy Road intersection around 5:30 p.m.

Corp. Lisa Jones with West Prince RCMP said the preliminary investigation suggests an eastbound vehicle had stopped on the highway preparing to make a left turn onto the Foy Road when a car, approaching from the rear, pulled to the righthand shoulder to pass the stopped vehicle. She said it appears the driver lost control of his vehicle and it swerved across the highway into the path of an oncoming cargo van.

“They couldn’t avoid it,” she said of the resulting collision.

Both vehicles came to rest in the ditch on the north side of the highway.

The driver of the car was declared dead at the scene. There were no other occupants in the car. The two occupants of the cargo van were assessed at the scene by paramedics but did not require medical treatment.

Highways personnel have closed the highway to through traffic from Elmsdale Corner to the Gard Road while an RCMP collision analyst examines the scene. The highway reopened to traffic around midnight.

Corp. Jones said police were assisted at the scene by Island EMS and Alberton Fire Department.
