CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The City of Charlottetown is spending more than $170,000 in additional work at the Fitzroy Parkade.
Council voted unanimously to do the work, the cost of which includes all taxes, at a recent special meeting.
Williams Murphy & MacLeod, the contractor, has been in the midst of a major expansion to the parkade for the past few weeks and it was deemed appropriate by all parties that while the heavy work is taking place it would be a good time to get at other minor work — such as caulking and cleaning up around doors, vents, drains, etc.
Strescon in Bedford, N.S., provided all of the precast concrete and will handle the caulking duties.
Coun. Mike Duffy, chairman of the public works committee, said the expansion was part of a $709,000 resolution passed by council in April.
Duffy said significant savings are possible by doing this work with the same contractors while they are on site doing the larger job.
“Basically, at the end of the day, the city will have what people would consider to be a brand new building," Duffy said, noting the city also sees a 10 per cent rebate on capital expenditures from the province that will see it get about $17,500 back on this project.
Coun. Greg Rivard, chairman of the planning and heritage committee, said the parkade project is going through the design review process although the city is still waiting for the final renderings to be submitted to the planning department.
