CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. – The University of Prince Edward Island has a student union president-elect after a byelection spurred by the abrupt resignation of Hammad Ahmed earlier this month.
According to the unofficial results on the student union’s website, first-year student Chelsea Perry received 432 votes to Justin Clory’s 377. There were 868 votes cast between Jan. 23 and 24, with 59 abstentions.
The results will not be official until the student union council approves them on Jan. 28.
Ahmed resigned abruptly in early January, several months before his term as president was up. He did not provide a reason in his resignation letter.
According to Perry’s campaign Facebook page, she plans to push for greater mental health resources for students, work to revise the university’s sexual assault policy and create more openness and transparency between council and the student body.
