CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Linden Avenue will be closed from St. Peters Road to Kensington Road for milling. The sidewalks in the area will remain open. The work is expected to start at approximately 7 a.m.
Sidewalk and curbing work is scheduled to take place in the following areas for the week of Oct. 19-23:
Dorchester Street between Weymouth and Cumberland streets;
Queen Street between Richmond and Sydney streets in front of the Dominion Building;
Churchill Avenue between Greenfield Avenue and North River Road.
Work will be taking place on Beach Grove Road, from the corner of Maypoint Road towards the Beach Grove Home. Traffic may be reduced to one-lane alternating throughout the day. These delays are necessary for the construction of the active pathway along Beach Grove Road that will connect to a trail near the Beach Grove Home. This work is expected to be ongoing for the next few weeks.
UPEI road extension work will be taking place for the week of October 19 to 23. This work consists of the expansion of the University Avenue and Enman Crescent (south) intersection, including the widening of the roadway and work on the median. Only minor traffic delays are expected, and traffic control personnel will be on site.
Work will continue on upgrades to the pedestrian crossing at the intersection of Great George Street and Fitzroy Street. Traffic will be reduced to one lane, at times, with alternating traffic. Traffic control personnel will be on-site to direct motorists. Pedestrians are advised that the existing overhead crossing light will be removed while the work is ongoing and will be reinstated upon completion.
Water Street will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic from Haviland Street to Union Street to allow for the installation of underground electrical utilities. Traffic will be detoured. Traffic heading down Water Street will be directed onto Pownal Street. Motorists are advised to seek alternate routes.
Tree work will be taking place at the northwest corner of Queen Street and Richmond Street. Traffic delays in this area may occur and traffic control personnel will be on site.
Work to install communications infrastructure is planned for the Confederation Trail. For Thursday, Oct. 22, the Confederation Trail will be closed between Mount Edward Road and Towers Road. In the afternoon, the trail will also be closed between Towers Road and Belvedere Avenue. Signage will be posted at the trail/roadway intersections advising that the section is closed.
Provincial Traffic Advisories:
The province has started work to replace and widen the existing stream culvert at Andrew’s Pond on Route 2/St. Peters Road. As referenced in a public notice by the Transportation, Infrastructure and Energy Department, a temporary diversion road will be constructed to allow traffic to pass through the site while this work is being completed. The first phase of this project is expected to be underway until mid-December. Drivers should expect additional delays due to this work and are encouraged to choose alternate routes. The sidewalk and trail will be closed to pedestrians during construction. Please reduce speed, obey signs and traffic control personnel, and be prepared to stop. The Charlottetown water and sewer utility has critical infrastructure in this construction zone including two watermains and a sewer forcemain. The infrastructure will be protected in the area during construction. A limited number of utility customers in the area may experience temporary disruption to service during necessary valve installation. Anyone who notices a change in water pressure or issues with their water service should contact the water and sewer utility at 902-629-4014 during regular business hours (Outside of business hours: 902-626-2100).
The construction of the Active Transportation Corridor across the Hillsborough Bridge and Causeway will begin on Wednesday, Oct. 21. Traffic control will begin setting up jersey barriers across the bridge on the downstream (harbour) side. Traffic control will be on site each workday to set up (and tear down) for two lanes out to Stratford and one lane in to Charlottetown between 12 p.m. and 6 p.m., Monday to Friday. Traffic will be two lanes into Charlottetown and one lane out to Stratford all other times of the day and over the weekend. Work is expected to continue through to mid-to-late December and may require carry over into 2021, depending on weather and material deliveries.
