CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A 77-year-old Island woman will undergo a driving review following a crash in Charlottetown Tuesday that involved three unoccupied vehicles and damage to a store front.
Charlottetown police received a call at 1 p.m. on June 4 reporting an incident at 339 University Avenue – the location of The Great Canadian Dollar Store.
Sgt. Chris Watts said the woman was travelling west on Lincoln Street, near the Royal Bank, when she struck three unoccupied vehicles, causing one of the vehicles to crash into the business, causing “extensive” damage to the store structure.
Watts suspects the cost of damages is in the thousands.
“Any time you get into structural damages, the cost is astronomical,” he said, adding the impact caused a drink cooler inside the store to be knocked over, scattering drink containers all over the floor.
The driver was not hurt and has been sent to highway safety for an administrative driving assessment.
Two pedestrians suffered minor injuries as a result of the incident.
Watts said the outcome could have been much worse, as it occurred in a busy area where lots of teenagers hang out during lunchtime.
“We’re very fortunate it didn’t end up worse than it was. It could have been catastrophic,” he told The Guardian.
The investigation is ongoing.
