CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown resident says the city needs to do a better job of improving accessibility around construction sites.

Peter Rukavina, a member of the mayor’s task force on active transportation committee, said there is very little consideration given to pedestrians and people in wheelchairs in areas around construction sites.

Rukavina cited the Homburg Hotel on Grafton Street and the new library construction as examples where there was no plan for pedestrians in place.

Jason White, another committee member, pointed out that it was also difficult to navigate the crosswalk at Longworth Avenue and the Confederation Trail during recent construction.

Scott Adams, manager of public works, said the department is working on changing the provisions for pedestrian access around construction sites.

Those provisions will include developing a bylaw which will detail what contractors must do with the public right-of-way. The document is currently in draft form.
