CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. - City police have arrested eight alleged repeat offenders and laid dozens of charges against them over the past week.
Charlottetown Police Services said those arrested are well known to police and each has significant criminal records.
The eight include seven men and one woman. A total of 78 charges were laid.
Six of the eight accused have been remanded in custody, while the other two have been released on conditions. All of them are scheduled to appear in court at later dates.
- On Jan. 3, a 25-year-old Charlottetown woman was arrested and remanded in custody. She faces a total of 15 charges, including fraudulent use of a credit card, theft under $5000, assault, seven counts of breach of probation, failure to comply with an undertaking and four counts of failure to attend court. The woman has a total of 48 Criminal Code convictions on her prior record.
- Also on Jan. 3, a 40-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested and remanded in custody. He faces six charges, including four counts of breach of probation, failure to comply with an undertaking and failure to attend court. The accused has a total of 66 convictions on his record.
- On Jan. 4, a 22-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested and remanded on a total of 22 charges. They include break and enter, two counts of possession of stolen property, five counts of theft under $5,000, fraudulent use of a credit card, eight counts of breach of probation and five counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. He has six prior convictions.
- A 39-year-old Charlottetown man was also arrested Jan. 4 before being released from custody on several conditions. He faces two charges: possession of stolen property and breach of probation. The accused has a total of 98 prior Criminal Code convictions.
- Four more men were arrested on Jan. 8.
- A 34-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested and detained on a total of 10 charges. They include two counts of theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, three counts of breach of probation, trespass at night and three counts of failure to comply with an undertaking. He has 101 prior convictions on his record.
- A 23-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested on two charges before being released on conditions. He is charged with theft under $5,000 and breach of probation. His prior record includes 17 convictions.
- A 42-year-old Charlottetown man was arrested and remanded on a total of 13 charges. They include four counts of fraudulent use of a credit card, five counts of breach of probation and four counts of possession of stolen property. The accused has 10 previous convictions.
- Finally, a 36-year-old Ontario man was arrested and remanded on eight charges, including theft of a motor vehicle, flight from police, dangerous driving, prohibited driving, two counts of possession of stolen property and two counts of theft under $5,000. The man has a total of 86 prior Criminal Code convictions.
