CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — City police are investigating after receiving a report of a man with a firearm on the Confederation Trail Monday.
Police shut down a section of the trail for about two hours but were unable to locate a suspect.
Deputy chief Brad MacConnell said the call came in at about 2:06 p.m.
“A female bicyclist reported seeing a male with what she believed to be a handgun on the Confederation Trail,” said MacConnell, who added the incident occurred between the bypass and Towers Road.
Officers armed with carbine rifles kept an eye on the section of the trail until about 4:30 p.m.
MacConnell, speaking at a news conference at the city's police station late Monday afternoon, said the cyclist reported the incident to police once she arrived home, about 10 minutes after she saw the man.
The suspect was described as in his late 30s with a beard, wearing sunglasses and a black backpack.
“Significant police resources were sent to the scene, completed an exhaustive search but were unable to locate anyone of that description,” said MacConnell.
He said police have not received other reports of similar activity but asked that anyone who was on the trail around that time and saw anything suspicious or a suspect matching the description to contact police.
“If you are (the suspect) and it’s a more legitimate reason… please contact us and let us find a resolution to this incident.”
