CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Charlottetown Mayor Philip Brown wants the 1765 date removed from the "Welcome to Charlottetown, Birthplace of Confederation" sign, located at the corner of Water and Grafton streets.

On the left side of the sign in small print, it reads “historic Charlottetown est. 1765’’, a date he feels may cause some confusion as it has no connection to the city being the birthplace of Confederation.

The 1765 date is the year the city was established following surveyor Samuel Holland’s arrival.

The sign itself was created in conjunction with various partners and funding.

Following discussion at a recent meeting of the strategic priorities and intergovernmental co-operation committee, the consensus was to reach out to partners and see if there is any objection to removing the date.
