Charlottetown mayor-elect Philip Brown wants to work with Cornwall and Stratford to shut down all sewage lagoons.

Raw sewage would, instead, be processed at the city’s pollution control plant on Riverside Drive.

“We have a sewage lagoon in Stratford that’s eventually going to be decommissioned and will be pumped over to Charlottetown,’’ Brown said. “And, tenders are out for closing down the sewage lagoon in East Royalty.’’

Cornwall also has two lagoons, one just on the north side of the Petro-Canada gas station and another close to Hyde Park.

“I’m asking that we shut them down, close them, integrate their system with ours, create a Capital Area Pollution Control Commission. This is important because it’s about cleaning up our rivers.’’

Brown believes by doing that it opens rivers in the capital area up to more recreational use and creates more tourism and economic development opportunities.

“The three communities can tell people we not only talk the talk, we walk the walk when it comes to environmental sustainability.’’
