CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A judge is giving a young man time to seek treatment for mental health and addiction issues before sentencing him on a break and enter conviction.

Provincial court judge John Douglas adjourned sentencing against Andrew Christopher Cullen, 26, of Charlottetown until April 11 to allow Cullen time to participate in an off-Island treatment program.

Cullen’s lawyer Thane MacEachern noted this marks the first time his client has reached out for help.

MacEachern notes Cullen says he really wants help to stop drinking and that Cullen thinks he drinks heavily due to nightmares, anxiety and a lack of friends.

“At the present time, Andrew is certainly suffering,’’ said MacEachern.

Cullen pleaded guilty to breaking into a home on Beasley Avenue in Charlottetown on Sept. 15, 2018. He stole a number of items, including an X-box system, a knife and a flashlight.

He was arrested six days after the offence and returned all of the stolen property to police.
