CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A Charlottetown man who punched a woman before going into a restaurant bathroom to inject himself with drugs was sentenced recently to 45 days in jail.

Kyle Clifford Palmer, 34, appeared before Chief Judge Nancy Orr in provincial court where he pleaded guilty to assault.

Crown attorney Chad McQuaid told the court the assault followed a series of events throughout May 2 during which Palmer and the victim were involved in verbal altercations at a residence and a KFC.

Someone later picked the two up and throughout the drive away from Charlottetown, Palmer was swiping at the victim, pushed her and dumped the contents of her purse out onto her, McQuaid said.

The court heard that eventually the driver pulled over and a witness reported seeing Palmer punch the victim and pull her hair.

McQuaid said Palmer went into a nearby restaurant where he injected himself with drugs in the bathroom and wrote on the wall.

Palmer has been in custody since his arrest and Orr gave him credit of 40 days leaving him a further five days on his sentence.

He will also be on probation for two years, which includes a condition he have no contact with the victim.
