CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The city has upgraded the traffic lights at four intersections along North River Road, from Belvedere Avenue to Capital Drive, to improve traffic flow.

The intersections were equipped with Miovision Smartlink hardware at a cost of about $100,000.

A two-month study concluded that because the intersections weren’t working in sync with each other that traffic was bottlenecking, especially between 3 and 6 p.m. During this time frame, it took motorists heading from Belvedere Avenue to Capital Drive, four times longer than in non-peak hours.

As a result of the changes, travel times are said to have been reduced by 32 per cent between the hours of 4 and 6 p.m.
