Catherine King, mother of eight children including current P.E.I. Premier Dennis King, has died at age 85.

Born in Georgetown in 1935, King died on Wednesday at the nearby Kings County Memorial Hospital.

“Cattie” King is survived by her children Benji Stevens, Lloyd King, Peggy King, Pam Jenkins, Mark King, Toby Murphy and Susan Younger, as well as the premier.

Premier Dennis King spoke often and fondly of his mother. On Mother’s Day, he posted a social media video featuring the two bantering about themselves and family.

Upon becoming the leader of the Progressive Conservative Party in early 2019, before taking the stage, the premier’s first phone call was to his mother, and he referenced her in his speech upon being sworn in as premier.

“At this time, we are giving the premier privacy to be with his family,” read a brief e-mailed statement from the P.E.I. Premier’s Office on Wednesday.
