Canadian Tire, Charlottetown

It appears Charlottetown’s Canadian Tire store may be moving down the street.

The franchise has preliminary site plans in place for a move from its current location on Buchanan Drive to Spencer Drive, the site of Plazacorp’s new development next to the Charlottetown Mall that features Sobey’s as the anchor tenant.

Joscelyn Dosanjh, manager of corporate communications with Canadian Tire, would not confirm  the franchise’s intentions to move but said there might be some news to share early next year.

“Please feel free to check back with me in January, at which time I may have information that I can share,’’ Dosanjh said in an email to The Guardian.

For its part, the City of Charlottetown’s planning staff says no “formal’’ application has been submitted yet although staff have seen a preliminary site plan.

If the move happens it would signal another possible shakeup in the Charlottetown retail industry. Kent just opened its new location out by Sears while Target is getting close to opening as the new anchor tenant at the Charlottetown Mall.

It’s interesting to note that the Financial Post said late last year that Target’s move into Canada was expected to reduce sales at Canadian Tire, which also owns Mark’s Work Wearhouse and Sport Chek, by one per cent.
