A downed burnt wire was the reason more than 6,500 Maritime Electric customers were without power Monday morning.

Maritime Electric spokeswoman Kim Griffin said there was a burnt wire down on the Sherwood Road, up from the West Royalty substation.

At the peak of the outages, the utility reported 6,523 customers affected.

The power was out from about 8:45 a.m. to 11:27 a.m.

In a Jan. 13 Tweet, Maritime Electric said the areas affected by the outage included: Cornwall, North River, Bonshaw, East Wiltshire, Riverdale, Emyvale, Desable, Rocky Point, Canoe Cove and surrounding areas.

Several schools in the area were also affected.
