SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — The traffic lights at one of Summerside’s busiest intersections have been inoperable for several days and city staff are still trying to figure out why.
The lights are at the intersection of Water Street East and MacEwen Road and are currently flashing red to indicate a four-way stop.
The situation has resulted in extended lineups in all directions, frustrating motorists.
According to the city, the problem started late last week when the program monitoring the lights registered an error in the system code. Staff determined a controller unit in the lights needed to be replaced and it was.
The lights became operational on Friday, but by Saturday had failed again. City staff have been working with the manufacturer to try and find a fix and now suspect there is a problem with the unit’s wiring. They are dealing with experts in Quebec to try and fix the issue and were hopeful that might be accomplished by Tuesday evening.
The city has said it has a replacement on hand if need be and if all else fails it will be installed.
