CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Coun. Bob Doiron, chairman of the protective and emergency services committee, said his committee is going to try to get word out that residents who live in apartments aren’t permitted to have barbecues on their decks.

Following an apartment fire on Harley Street last month, P.E.I.’s fire marshal said his office plans to send notices to apartment building owners reminding them the Fire Prevention Act says propane or charcoal barbecues aren’t allowed on balconies with an overhang and should be at least 10 feet out from the building.

Coun. Julie McCabe said she’s still seeing some barbecues on people’s decks.

Doiron responded that his committee will work on getting an information package out to address the issue.
