THREE RIVERS, P.E.I. – RCMP may start rolling up on Montague drivers who prefer to block traffic rather than exit their vehicle for a morning coffee.
The issue of drivers stopping on Main Street while waiting to pull into Tim Hortons was discussed during the RCMP report at Three Rivers council meeting Monday, Feb. 11.
There has been a recurring issue of drivers blocking traffic while waiting for the drive-thru line.
Coun. Alan Munro asked if police ever issued warnings or tickets to drivers who stop on the road.
“It is a bit of an issue, especially with Roll Up the Rim going on now,” said Munro.
Sgt. Howard Fitzpatrick acknowledged the issue but also said it was a difficult problem to enforce.
“It backs up so fast, then disappears fairly quickly, too,” said Fitzpatrick, adding that some officers have previously spoken to drivers of stopped vehicles. “But it’s one of those things, it can be sort of a difficult problem.”
Fitzpatrick said a study conducted last year showed the majority of the area’s fender benders happen on that stretch of Main Street because of individuals pulling in and out of businesses.
He said he would ask RCMP officers conducting traffic enforcement to keep an eye on the issue.
In his report, Fitzpatrick said the area of Three Rivers received 182 calls for service in January, including seven traffic collisions.
Other calls for service included 14 speeding violations, 31 non-moving traffic violations, 12 driving while disqualified and one call each of dangerous driving, driving while prohibited and driving without due care and attention.
RCMP also received calls for one assault, one criminal harassment, seven mischief complaints, nine thefts under 5,000 and one report of sexual assault.
