SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — In her lifetime, P.E.I. singer-songwriter Meaghan Blanchard has received many honours.
She’s won two ECMA awards and multiple Music P.E.I. awards.
Blanchard’s song “Got to Let” was featured on the CBC TV series, “Saving Hope”.
But none of these accolades match her latest honour – giving birth to P.E.I.’s first baby of the year at 4:13 a.m. on Jan. 1, 2020.
His father is Island musician Thomas Webb.“There’s no comparison. It’s a different kind of proud for myself and my partner,” says Blanchard, whose son, Casey James Webb, weighed in at eight pounds, 12 ounces at the Prince County Hospital in Summerside.
“While the music accolades we’ve received have been amazing, as feathers in our caps, there’s nothing like going through labour and giving birth to make you feel proud of yourself as a soul and as a person. We just can’t believe it. We just keep looking at him and saying, ‘oh my God’. He’s pretty special.”
So far, things are going well.
“It’s kind of a sink or swim thing. We just have to figure it out,” says Blanchard, who appreciates the support that the Prince County Hospital has given the couple.
“The nursing staff and doctors have been phenomenal. We couldn’t have done it without them.”
As for what Casey James’ future holds, it will likely involve music.
“He’s been in utero all summer while I played in ‘Heaven to Me’ so he’s heard lots of music. I’ve also received lots of kicks in the ribs (from him) during that show.”
