It's another snow day today for Prince Edward Island schoolchildren and much of the rest of the province as crews work to clear up to 80 cm of snow that fell in P.E.I. over the Islander Day weekend.

The Confederation Bridge finally opened to traffic this morning after a two-day closure to all vehicles, but RCMP has issued a news release asking everyone to stay off the roads unless travel is essential.

Those who do need to be on the roads are asked to proceed cautiously and be mindful of vehicles that had been abandoned during the blizzard and which still may be buried in snow on the roadways.

The Department of Transportation says plows are working to clear the roadways but, due to high volumes of snow, cleanup will require more time than usual.

Meanwhile, Environment Canada has issued a special weather statement for Prince Edward Island warning of a possible winter storm Thursday.

A low-pressure system is forecast to develop off the East Coast of the United States Wednesday evening and approach the Maritimes on Thursday. This system will bring snow to Prince Edward Island on Thursday.

"Early indications suggest snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 centimetres for most areas," says the statement.

"Winds will not be as strong with this approaching system compared to this past weekend's storm."

Today, the forecast calls for sun -- but it will be cold. Environment Canada warns of a cold windchill of -27 C for P.E.I. this morning.
